Opening speech for the very first (virtual) International Conference on Biobased Surfactants by Dr. ir. Sofie Dobbelaere (Managing Director Flanders Biobased Valley).
Virtual visit to Ghent, Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant, FLAMAC and Radius
As physical visits are currently not allowed, you can sit back and relax to enjoy four exciting virtual visits. We will start with a visit to the lovely city of Ghent and continue with visits to three cutting edge institutes in Flanders collaborating on the topic of biobased surfactants: Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant (Ghent), FLAMAC (Ghent) and Radius (Geel).

Take some time to indulge yourself with a delicious homemade lunch. Or, make that a ‘walking lunch’ and book short one-on-one meetings with the ICBS poster presenters via the B2MATCH platform. Presentation of the AppliSurf project - Prof. Wim Soetaert and dr. ir. Sophie Roelants
The ICBS conference is organized within the framework of the closing meeting of the exciting AppliSurf project screening the APPLIcation potential of a portfolio of novel types of glycolipid microbial bio-based SURFactants of which the exciting results will be explained to you by the AppliSurf Project Manager(s).
Keynote lecture: Process optimisation and evaluation of mannosylerythritol- and cellobiose lipids - Dr. ir. Susanne Zibek
Dr. Zibek will enlighten us on her long lasting work with the intriguing glycolipid microbial biosurfactants mannosylerythritol lipids and cellobiose lipids which are expected to enter the market soon.
Keynote lecture: Biocatalysis to produce alkyl glycosides and sugar esters from wheat bran - Prof. Caroline Rémond
Prof. Rémond will showcase the opportunities of using enzymes towards the biocatalytic synthesis of glycolipid biobased surfactants.

REWOFERM - A naturally mild and powerful biosurfactant - Silvia Jentsch
Many different types of microbial biosurfactants have been discovered over the past century and several types have made it to the market. Evonik pioneered on the European B2B market with glycolipid microbial biosurfactants sophorolipids which will be explained in the opening lecture, while other recent findings, processing methods and commercial opportunities will be covered in two parallel sessions. The session will be closed by a keynote lecture on promising approaches towards production of the lipopeptide microbial biosurfactant surfactin by Prof. Hausmann.

Keynote lecture: Techno-economic evaluation of a biorefinery applying food waste for sophorolipid production - a case study for Hong Kong - Dr. Carol S.K. Lin
Dr. Lin will explain us how we can make the production of microbial glycolipid biosurfactants more sustainable and circular. She will also present a commercial case study for the efficient conversion of Hong Kong food waste into sophorolipids.
